Alternative therapies for toddler with urinary tract infection

It’s been just under three weeks since Eliza’s urine started smelling ‘off’.
It’s probably been just under two weeks since she displayed the need to itch around her bottom.

Other symptoms:

  • Complained about vaginal and abdominal ‘hurt’.
  • Urinating was painful (burning around vagina?)
  • Some bloating
  • Some constipation
  • Developed allergic rash to diaper
  • Urine smelled ‘medicinal’; Dark, Cloudy
  • Tendency to sit on potty for longer than ‘usual’.
  • No false alarms/straining

Put her on oral probiotics (FiveLac, Homemade Kefir Water), use cloth diapers at bedtime, high amounts of fruit juice, D-Mannose powder, homeopathic Tissue Salts for urinary system (4,5,9), live yoghurt applied topically made it worse.
A week later…

  • Home urine tests showed elevated nitrate, traces of protein, traces of white blood cell, low ph (5-5.5), medium-to-high SG.
  • Urine consistently dark; somewhat cloudy; odor decreased from previously
  • Intermittent vaginal itching
  • Need to urinate was immediate and urgent, some ‘leaks’ into clothes
  • No longer sitting on potty for longer than ‘usual’.
  • Wasn’t drinking much

Used “germoline” topically – British topical antibacterial w/ anaesthetic properties. No more itching for several days.
Removed refined sugars and flours from her diet, continued with high fruit. Diet was high in oatmeal, potatoes, nuts, dried fruit. Continued with oral probiotics, cloth diapers cleared suspected allergic rash, continued homeopathic Tissue Salts.
Introduced homemade ‘pedialyte’, upon which liquid intake returned to normal.

Another week later

  • Urine odorless, darker in the morning lighter in the evening, always clear
  • Home urine test (am) show elevated nitrate, medium-high SG, (pm) normal results typically throughout remainder of day (some anomalies where nitrate levels remained elevated) until last urine of day
  • Intermittent vaginal itching, even less frequently than before
  • Need to urinate not urgent; negligible leaks into clothes

Used germoline once in the week as needed
Higher nitrate results for longer seemed to be linked to potato/oats
Continued with oral probiotics, continued homeopathic Tissue Salts.
Further restricted diet to some nuts, cucumber, celery, eggs, zucchini, olives, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onion, garlic, brown rice (vegetarian candida diet).

We took Eliza to her pediatrician, and a 3-day culture showed considerable presence of the E. Coli bacteria in her urinary tract.
Thanks to the alternative therapies, her body was obviously able to keep the bacteria at bay.

As soon as I took her off of the alternative medicines, her condition went haywire!!!

I guess that the bacteria were simply too entrenched for her to be able to get rid of them without antibiotics.

We kept her on Kefir water while on the antibiotics so that she’d not get a yeast infection, and then supplimented with FiveLac once the course of antibiotics were over.

She’s back to her old self now.

RESOURCES:
Cell salts for urinary tract infection:

NAT SULPH (Sodium sulphate) can be taken when it is difficult to retain urine.
CALC PHOS (Calcium phosphate) can be taken for frequent urination.
MAG PHOS (Magnesium phosphate) can be taken when the need to urinate is constant when standing or walking.

Professional homeopaths typically suggest the following treatments to deal with a UTI. Homeopathic remedies are highly individualized and tailored to address specific symptoms, personalities and situations, in addition to the primary condition so they work best for circumstances most closely matching the below descriptions. Take as directed on the product label.
  • Apis mellifica works best for those who experience stinging and burning pains along with a strong urge to urinate that result in only a few drops.
Berberis treats UTIs that produce burning and shooting pains while urinating that spread to the pelvis and back. The bladder often experiences a dull ache that intensifies with movement.
Cantharis is the most-used homeopathic remedy for UTI and works best for people who are restless and experience burning and decreased flow while urinating.
Mercurius is most effective for people experiencing burning urination, symptoms that are worse in the evening and accompanied by chills and sweating. The burning is more intense when not using the bathroom.
Nux vomica works best for people who have a persistent urge to urinate and experience needle-like pain; an urge to defecate is usually present at the same time.
Pulsatilla is an appropriate treatment for people who tend to be emotional, crave attention and leak urine after laughing, coughing, sneezing or being surprised; they also experience a feeling of urgency about using the bathroom.
