Rain, a visit, and a camera

I’m 27.
Had a birthday 4 days ago.

It’s not the best picture by any means, but this isย the ‘cake’ that I made to share with my work colleagues.

Two chunks of watermelon, separated by slices of honey dew.
Strawberry halves decorating the bottom-half … grapes forming a ring around the base of the top-half.
Slices of kiwi underneath of banana ‘candles’.

In other news, we’re SOOOOO behind on the gardening ๐Ÿ™
It has been raining persistently for weeks now.
We get a couple rain-free days, but then it starts back up again.
Normally this would be fantastic for a garden, but we’ve not had all of our topsoil delivered yet, and they don’t like delivering when it’s wet (weighs more, so costs more in fuel etc). So here we are just waiting… and waiting…

The experiment potatoes I started – some from cuttings, some from simply pulling the sprouts off of the potato and planting those – are all doing very well.
It strikes me that they don’t really care much for being moved, as 50% of the ones that I transplanted ended up dying.
But they were experiments afterall.

I have 50-odd organic seed potatoes, and need to grow 150 plants … so that’s 3 plants per potato.
I think I’ll be able to do much better than that ๐Ÿ™‚

Planting by the moon, as I’m trying to do, has meant that only 3 of the 4 phase quarters are used for planting. Leafy greens during the first, fruit-producing during the second, marrow/squash just before the 3rd, and roots in the third.
The 4th quarter is not advised for planting.

It’s nice to have a break – and hopefully abiding by these guidelines will ensure that our produce is reliable … but it does mean that you have to plant more at once.

We have so many plants started … and they need transplanting so badly already … but there are so many more that need to be started, and I don’t really want to be starting them in the beds just yet – it’s still not past the last average frost-date…

sigh

Frank’s mother came to visit us for two weeks ๐Ÿ™‚
She arrived on the 18th, and left on the 2nd (well, actually, it was the 3rd … very, very early in the morning!!).
I think she had a good visit – the weather was far more amenable than the last time she was here, and she had a lovely spot next to the double window in the library for doing her laptop-based work.

She seemed to get on with Eliza VERY well. Eliza took to her immediately.
Frank and I were even able to go out on our own to get Frank’s new (used) vehicle – the Jeep pretty much ended up falling off of its wheels due to rust – and to go out on a dinner date for my birthday ๐Ÿ™‚

And finally, I’ve got a new (used) camera being delivered today.
I’m sooooooo excited.
I’ve had my eyes on a Pro DSLR for a few years; a Canon 5D.
Canon released an upgraded model recently – the ‘5D Mark II’, and I managed to pick up a used but “Like New” model on eBay for $250 less than most used models sell for.
With a brand new sale price in the $2750 range … and a regular second hand model around $2500, I was very glad for the $2250 price I got.
Why cheaper than average? Because the lady selling it on eBay only had 1 prior transaction, so I guess people were wary about her being a scammer.
Who knows.
You’ve gotta start somewhere, right?
With all of the buyer protection on both eBay and PayPal, I’m surprised that infrequent users are seen as less favourable … but hey –ย I’m not complaining!!
