Another something that I’ve been interested along the above lines is taking a course/courses in nutrition.
I’m not a fan of conventional education. I think it’s currently too much like healthcare – unfortunately an industry.
However, in order for a person to practise as a nutritionist/counsellor they have to have a license, which is obtained after the person has a degree.
So, I guess if I’m going to go into nutrition, I’m going to have to bite the bullet and get a degree at some point.
In the meantime, however, I’ve found some free resources at:
http://www.nafwa.org/lma/directory/Free_e-Courses/Nutrition/Nutrition.php and http://www.learnwell.org/nutri.htm.
For ‘raw data’, the USDA guide to the nutritional values of just about everything can be found here: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/HG72/hg72_2002.pdf
I’ve also downloaded a bunch of nutrition eBooks, which I’ll work my way through over the next however-many-months.
It’s difficult to read at the moment, as Eliza is extremely interested in my laptop. Plus – I’m away from her all day, and it’s pretty sad when I don’t giver her 100% of my attention in the evening.
Nevertheless, I figured that if I can cover a lot of the basics in my own time, grabbing moments here and there, it will make it easier when/if I do decide to pursue further degreed education.
