The million dollar question:
How do you turn a dark, dank, dreary dungeon-like 1870s basement laundry area, with a mere 6′ from floor to ceiling joists, into something worthy of your brightest whites?
To give you an idea of what I’m aiming for, have a look at these photos, and then continue reading below.
The basement used to be dirt.
Why ‘they’ didn’t excavate further before pouring the cement, I’ll never know, but I’ve got what I’ve got.
With only 6 feet between the concrete and the underside of the joists, there is NO way that I’ll be able to have vertical storage space.
However, even planning horizontally, how in the world do we make the area seem bright, cheerful, and spacious without any natural light?
This should be an interesting one!!
HI CUZ,
WHITE…LOTS OF WHITE…SHABBY CHIC WOULD GO GREAT BECAUSE YOU CAN BUY SHELVING AND TABLES AT YARD SALES AND THRIFT STORES. IF THE WALLS ARE NOT VERY GOOD, YOU CAN RUN CURTAINS ACROSS THEM LIKE IN ONE OF THE PHOTOS YOU HAD.
HORIZONTAL SHELVING THAT IS 3-4 FEET HIGH WOULD HOLD DETERGENT ETC., AND THE TOP CAN BE USED FOR FOLDING CLOTHES. A NICE ROD TO HANG UP CLOTHES WOULD HELP SO YOU CAN CARRY THEM UPSTAIRS ALREADY ON HANGERS. GET SOME BASKETS AND USE THEM TO CARRY UP TOWELS AND CLOTHING THAT IS FOLDED.
FRANK CAN BUILD THE SHELVING/TABLES I BET AND WITH MOULDING THEY WILL LOOK GORGEOUS.
IF I SEE ANY PHOTOS IN MAGAZINES, I WILL GET THEM TO YOU. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF SHABBY CHICING ALL MY DARK YARD SALE/THRIFT STORE FINDS THAT ARE NOW IN MY FAMILY ROOM.
I LOVE WHITE….MIX IN PALE BLUE OR PALE PINK, AND YOU WILL LOVE TO DO LAUNDRY.
LOVE YOU,
DIANE
